This Luring Gaze was based off a photograph I took of my cousin Katie during a trip to Chicago. Katie had such an intense look along with her vibrant blue eyes that I knew I had to paint it. Her hair flows in the wind giving the work a feeling of vitality and the abstract circular designs making up the background are unified with the circular pattern of her clothing. The background of the work was inspired by the bokeh created with a large aperture setting on a camera and I chose to spray paint blue circles into the background to match Katie’s eyes. A gray scale color scheme was used so that Katie’s eyes became the major focal point of the work and splatter paint was added to the background giving the work even more energy. Marble dust and joint compound were also used to give the painting texture and as a way to unify the background and foreground. Katie is a very strong person and I feel this painting matches her strength.
