Sergeant Major Robinson was a former ROTC teacher at my school many years ago and we wanted to honor him by hanging up his portrait in the ROTC hallway. The current ROTC teacher took the original photograph in the schools gym and I was asked to edit the photo. In order to honor Sgt. Maj. Robinson in the best way possible, I decided to change the background to make it appear that Sgt. Maj. Robinson was standing in front of a black/gray backdrop because I felt that the current background was far less dramatic. In order to accomplish the goal, I had to zoom in to the photograph to the point where I could see each pixel. From there, I slowly cut the original background out and then blurred the cut lines so that I can preserve the integrity of the piece. I then adjusted the white balance of the portrait and used a variety of vignettes to soften the edges of the artwork. Overall, I feel like accomplish my goal in honoring Sgt. Maj. Robinson and I believe that the final product appears much cleaner and professional.
